That reputation is real. So is the risk that comes with an industry where price competition sometimes means patients skip the verification steps that actually keep them safe.
This isn’t a checklist meant to scare you away from medical travel. It’s the checklist worth running through before you book anything, so the savings don’t come at the cost of the outcome.
The Accreditation That Actually Matters
Not all “accredited” claims mean the same thing. The gold standard internationally is Joint Commission International (JCI) certification — the same standard many U.S. hospitals hold — and Medellín is home to one of the small number of JCI-accredited facilities in Colombia (Hospital Pablo Tobón Uribe). If a clinic or surgeon can’t clearly tell you which accredited facility they operate out of, that’s already worth pausing on.
The Questions Worth Asking Before You Book
1. What is the surgeon’s RETHUS number? This is Colombia’s official national registry number for licensed health providers. A legitimate, licensed surgeon gives you this without hesitation. Reluctance or vagueness here is a genuine red flag — and not a hypothetical one: Colombian authorities have prosecuted cases of unlicensed individuals posing as certified plastic surgeons using fake credentials.
2. Are they a member of SCCP (Sociedad Colombiana de Cirugía Plástica)? Colombia’s professional plastic surgery society membership is another concrete, checkable credential — ask for it directly.
3. Which specific accredited facility will the procedure happen in? Vague answers (“a private clinic,” “our surgical center”) without a name and accreditation status are worth pushing back on. Real surgeons are specific about where they operate.
4. Who is the anesthesiologist, by name and credentials? This is the detail most patients never think to ask, and it matters more than almost anything else on this list — anesthesia complications, not the surgery itself, are where the most serious outcomes in cosmetic surgery tourism actually originate.
5. Are you being pushed toward a “mega-surgery” package? Packages bundling four or five procedures into a single extended session look efficient on paper, but longer anesthesia time is a well-documented complication risk. As a general rule, a single anesthesia session shouldn’t run much past six hours — if a package is pushing well beyond that to bundle in “one more thing,” that’s worth questioning.
6. What’s the actual follow-up and aftercare plan? Ask specifically what happens if a complication shows up after you’ve already flown home. A significant share of documented post-procedure complications trace back to inadequate follow-up care, not the original surgery.
Insurance and Paperwork
Standard travel insurance typically does not cover complications from elective procedures — you’ll usually need a separate medical travel or complication-specific policy, and it’s worth confirming exactly what it covers before you travel, not after something goes wrong. Get every cost, procedure detail, and aftercare commitment in writing ahead of time, not verbally on a consultation call.
